Become a Field Observer

This is where all bird enthusiasts can get involved! All reported observations of breeding evidence from anywhere in the state are important. Whether the evidence indicates observed, probable, possible, or confirmed breeding, it will contribute to what we know about breeding species in Minnesota.

Field Observers (and Surveyors too) can contribute observations of breeding evidence any time and anywhere. For every observation:

  • record the date,
  • record the time spent (for incidental observations, use 15 minutes)
  • identify the species,
  • report any evidence of breeding (e.g.: courtship behavior, hear nestlings) using evidence codes, and
  • report the location of the observation so we can attribute the observation to a geographic area.
  • Review the Handbook for instructions and the list of breeding evidence codes for each species. Enter your observations on a MNBBA Incidental Reporting Form for easy data entry or in any field notebook. The important thing is to be sure to record the necessary information.
